It has been proven in a family Bible held by Gibson relatives in Ellijay, GA that Thomas was indeed born January 18, 1826.

It seems apparent that this old family name was adopted from the name Gilbert. A popular nickname for Gilbert is "Gib" and the surname Gibson literally means, son of Gib. Although it is believed to be of Scottish origin, the surname Gibson appears in many old English records, dating back to 1379. One of the earliest colonists bearing this old family name to come to our shores was John Gibson, one of the earliest Virginia settlers in 1635. It also appears that one of his descendants, another John Gibson of Orange County, NC was a soldier of the American Revolution. Many descendants of this old family have made outstanding contributions in the service of our country including several Gibsons whose names are found in this book. Many persons named Gibson can be found throughout our nation, representing the arts and sciences, as well as the business world. The motto accompanying the coat of arms well befits those who bear the name, Gibson, "Courage, Charity, and Virtue."

Bill and Julia Ingle Schultz met a couple, Virginia and Paul Quarles in Ellijay, Gilmer County, GA in 1983. Virginia helped to find census records in the library in Ellijay, Georgia. The Quarles and Gibsons had intermarried. They told us that they thought that Russellville was in Kentucky.

Samuel W. GIPSON/GIBSON

Not much is know about Samuel except that in later life he was married to a full blood Cherokee and she had a daughter, Bunch Boling. Samuel is remember by Solomons grand children of having one arm. It is apparent in photos. In the 1860 Census of GA it states that he cannot write. It is not know if this was a birth defect or by accident.

S. L. Gibson Dies.

S. L. Gibson of Hillcrest farm died at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at Lamar Hospital where he had been for treatment two weeks. He had been in ill health some time, due to injuries. Emberson-Brown-Roden funeral home has charge, but funeral arrangements early Wednesday afternoon were incomplete.

S. L. Gibson of Hillcrest farm died at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at Lamar Hospital where he had been a patient about two weeks.

In August, 1936 his right hand was mangled when caught in a seed crusher at a Ft. Worth granary, and recently, while he was turning over in his bed at his home, he fractured his left arm, resulting in severe shock from which he never recovered. Funeral services were arranged for 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon at Emberson-Brown-Roden funeral home, conducted by the Rev. J. Roby Ward of Immanuel Baptist church, burial being made at Evergreen cemetery.

S. W. Wilbor, M. F. Wise, Harry Wilson, O. E. Means, Stewart Spencer and M. D. Emerson were named pallbearers. Born November 25, 1866 in Ellijay, Georgia, Mr. Gibson had been a resident of this county many years, he and his wife celebrating their golden wedding anniversary on Oct. 10 this year. He had been engaged in farming, formerly being superintendent of Lamar Cotton Oil Company's plant here. Surviving besides his wife, Mrs. Josie R. Gibson are two daughters, Mrs. W. E. Kammer and Mrs. Eva Ingle, a foster-daughter, Mrs. Matt Walker and two brothers, Samuel W. and James M. Gibson, all of Paris. There are 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Jessie R. Smith Mrs. Jessie Rosella Smith, the former Mrs. S. L. Gibson, died Wednesday at 730 p.m. at the home of a daughter, Mrs. W. E. Kammer, 125 11th NE. Ill recently, Mrs. Smith had been moved to the Kammer home from her apartment at 1127 Lamar Ave. The funeral, Friday at 4 p.m. will be held at Fry-Gibbs chapel by the Rev. Gene Burgess and the Rev John Shuler, interment to be made in Evergreen Cemetery. Pallbearers will be these grandsons; Leonard Jake Kammer, Robert Preston Kammer, Dan Moody Ingle, Jesse Lee Towers Jr., William J. Renfro and Ben L. Cunningham. Mrs. Smith, whose maiden name was Parmer, was born at Dalton, GA., February 4, 1871. She was married to Solomon L. Gibson in 1887 and they moved from Chattanooga, TN to Bonham in 1891. They lived in Durant, Okla., from 1900 to May 30, 1907 when they came to Paris. Mr. Gibson died here December 15, 1939. Surviving are two daughters Mrs. Kammer and Mrs. Eva Ingle, besides a foster-daughter, Mrs. Matt Walker all of Paris. 55 other descendants including six great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Florence Morgan, Lamar, Miss. and a half-brother, Roy A. Smith, Detroit, Mich.

She is interred in the Evergreen Cemetery in Paris, Texas.

In researching the Gibson family, it was discovered that five Gibson boys went to Chatanooga, Tennessee. Joseph F. William A. Samuel W. Solomon L. and John H. are listed in the city directory of Chatanooga. Ida Mae, first child of Solomon and Jessie R. was born in Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. The Gibson's were involved in the Lookout Incline Railroad. Joseph was a fireman; William, a watchman; Samuel, a watchman for AGSRR; Solomon, a laborer; and John, worked for the Union Iron Works.

William went back to Ellijay and mad his home there. Three of the Gibson boys, Solomon, John, and Samuel went to Durant, Oklahoma. Joseph and James went to Bonham, Texas. John cannot be found in the Texas Census records but family lore says that he was a traveling preacher.

Solomon Gibson owned property in Bonham, Texas, 1/2 mile South West of the Court House in a section known as Stones Addition. He purchased this property while residing in Durant. It was filed for record 19 December 1900.

Joseph F. Gibson filed for a Pony Homestead in Murray Court, Murray County, Georgia.

Joseph purchased property in Honey Grove, Texas in 1902. The property was on the North boundary line of West Market Street, 161/2 feet East of the Southeast corner of a lot. North with the East boundary line of an alley, 186 ft. then East 144 feet to the West boundary line of Spring Street then South 186 feet to the North side of West Market Street then West 144 feet to the place of the beginning.

Have granted, sold and conveyed and by these pesent do grant,sell and convey, unto the said Mrs. Eliza Anderson of the County of Delta, of the State of Texas, all that certain tract or parcel of land located within the corporate limits of the city of Paris and being a part of Larkin Tattan Headright Survey on the Eastside of South Main Street (described land previouly, Lavacca St.) Land surveyed by Jessie Wilburn et al to S. L. Gibson and wife on the 1st day of March 1916. Recorded in Book 161, Page 61, Lamar County Deed Records.

To have and to hold the above described premises together with all and singular the rights and appurtenances thereto in anywise belonging unto the said Mrs. E. Anderson heirs and assigns forever, and we do hereby bind ourselves heirs executors and administrators to warrant and forever defend all and singular, t he said premises unto the said Mrs. E. Anderson heirs and assigns against every person whomsoever lawfully claining or to claim the sum or any part thereof. Filed 31st day of December, 1920 at 230 P. M.
