Joseph J. Dickson was a son of Joseph D. Dickson ( - 1830) and Sarah "Sally" Latimer (1806 - after 1880). The ancestry of Joseph D. Dickson is not known, but he and Sarah "Sally" Latimer married in 1821 in Carroll Co., TN, and he probably died in Carroll Co., TN. Sarah Latimer was the daughter of James L. "Old Jimmy" Latimer (1783 - 1860) and Jane Hamilton (1784-1855). "Old Jimmy" Latimer brought part of his family to Red River Co., TX from Carroll Co., TN in April 1833. They traveled by wagons, crossing the Mississippi River by ferry at Memphis, TN, through what is now Little Rock, Arkansas, and on to what is now Clarksville, Red River Co., TX. Other Latimer family members followed in 1837 and 1838. The Latimer family was a famous Texas family. Albert Hamilton, One of "Old Jimmy's" sons was a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence at Washington-on-the-Brazos on 2 March 1836.
Joseph D. Dickson and Sarah "Sallie" Latimer had 4 children, all born in Tennessee, probably in Carroll County. The youngest child was Joseph J. Dickson born about 1830. He married Sarah S. "Sallie" Epperson 4 December 1856 in Red River Co., TX. "Sallie" was born about 1839, and was the daughter of Ben Epperson, a prominent man in the area.
Joseph J. Dickson is listed in the 1850 Red River Co., TX Census, living in the household of his sister Miranda who was married to Amos Morrill, an attorney and later a Federal Judge. In the 1860 census, Joseph J. and Sarah S. "Sallie" Epperson Dickson were living with one surviving child in Collin Co., TX. He is listed as an attorney, and they own seven slaves. Joseph J. Dickson was a partner with J. W. Throckmorton in the Dickson and Throckmorton Law Firm.
Joseph and "Sallie" had four children born between 1857 and 1861. Joseph joined S. B. Maxey's 9th Texas Infantry, CSA, on 9 October 1861, enlisting at McKinney, Collin Co., TX. He was a Captain of Co. I, , and was killed on 6 April 1862 on the first day of the Battle of Shiloh in Tennessee.
"Sallie's" brother B. H. Epperson, who was also an attorney, was the administrator of Joseph's estate. The estate purchased a homestead for "Sallie" and her surviving children near Clarksville, Red River Co., TX, where they are listed in the 1870 Census.
"Sallie" later moved to Dallas, Dallas Co., TX. She died in about 1921.

Emma Dickson born ca 1857, died 14 April 1859, buried at the Old Shiloh Cemetery, near Madras, Red River Co., TX.
Bennie Dickson born ca 1859, died 31 July 1861, buried at the Old Shiloh Cemetery, near Madras, Red River Co., TX.
May "Miranda" "Mary" Dickson born in Texas 1859 or 1860. She married Henry Exall 9 November 1887 at Dallas, Dallas Co., TX, and they had one son. She died in 1936.
Joseph M. Dickson born in Texas ca 1861, died in 1909. He lived in Dallas, Texas, and never married.
