James Hawkins Dillard was born 28 Mar 1821 in Tennessee, the son of Joseph Josiah Dillard (1778 - 1865) and Mary Jones Dillard (1785 - 1856). James died 5 Jan 1869 in Lamar Co., Texas. He married (1) Elizabeth Stacy in Williamson Co., IL on 14 Apr 1845. He married (2) Mary Ann Celeste Burrow before 1858. She was born 4 Apr 1836 in Mississippi, and died 25 Oct 1928 in Texas.
Family oral history says that James was killing hogs in his hog pen when his gun fell out of his holster, discharged and killed him. He is buried in Antioch Cemetery, located near Biardstown, approximately 12 - 13 miles southeast of Paris, Lamar County, Texas.
His second wife, Mary A. C. Dillard Dunham received a pension from the State of Texas for service of her first husband, James H. Dillard, in the Confederate Army #42898.
Mary A. C. Burrow Dillard Dunham is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Lamar County, Texas. (Location: 18-69-03) next to her second husband, Thomas J. Dunham.

Newton Dillard is found in Lamar County, Texas, 1870 census, page 299. Alabama State Archives. Newton Dillard was a corporal in the Civil War in the 9th Texas Infantry with Maxey's Lamar Rifles from Lamar County, Texas.

She married William C. Holt. He was born 7 Mar 1862, and died 1 Apr 1951 in Lamar Co., Texas. Will Holt is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Lamar County, Texas.

James Hawkins Dillard was the brother of Miles Anderson Dillard (1819 - 1911), also of Lamar County, who served with distinction in the 9th Texas Infantry from Lamar County.
Mrs. M. A. C. Dunham received a pension from the State of Texas for service of her first husband, James Hawkins Dillard, in the Confederate Army #42898. She filed for the pension on 6 Apr 1927 and was approved on 14 Apr 1927. She stated that he died on 5 Jan 1869 in Lamar Co., that she married him in 1857 in Tennessee, she was age 91, she resided in Lamar Co. for 71 years, that his full name was James Hawkins Dillard, that he served in Go. G, Whitfield's Legion in both infantry and cavalry.
Also in the file is a letter from the War Dept., Washington, D. C., which states James H. Dillard was Lt., Co. G, 27th Texas Cavalry, Whitfield's Legion, 1st Texas Legion, enlisted on 1 Mar 1862 at Paris, TX and on Muster Roll for May and June 1862. It also states: "was original 3rd Lt. of the Co. but was not re-elected and was discharged." His name appears on a List of old officers of Whitfield's Legion who were not re-elected. List dated Camp Near Pineville, Miss. 11 Jun 1862.
An affidavit from W. F. Martin, dated 4 Apr 1927 states: "James H. Dillard enlisted in Paris, TX in 1862 in Capt. George Patterson's Company. Went from Paris to Ozark, AR. Dismounted there. Went to Memphis, Tenn., and from there to Corinth, Miss. Mr. Dillard was a Lt. He was given permission to return to Texas, which he did during the year 1862 accompanied by Capt. Paterson. He afterwards enlisted in the Militia in Texas and as far as I know served until close of war."
An affidavit from W. F. Lynn, signed 4 Apr 1927 states: "I was acquainted with James H. Dillard husband of applicant. He was a member of Maxwell's Company D, Chamberlain's Battalion, Texas Militia. He joined this company in the early part of the year 1864. He was stationed at Bonham and Tyler until Oct. 8, 1864 and returned to Paris, serving until close of war. We were disbanded and returned to our homes in the early part of the year 1865."
