John Ferdinand Greiner was the son of Christoph Ferdinand Greiner Dorothea Bohlen and was born 18 November 1844 in Charleston, South Carolina, and died 30 April 1920 in Paris, Lamar Co., TX. He was buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Block C-16S-01, Paris, Lamar County, Texas. He married (1) Susan E. before 1876. She was born 23 January 1849 in Missouri, and died 23 June 1935 in Paris, Lamar Co., TX. She was buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Paris, Texas.
He married (2) Ida V. Cutler 13 September 1876 in Paris, Lamar County, Texas.
He married (3) Anna J. Finney 03 February 1915 in DeKalb Co., Texas.
John F. Greiner was referred to by Ballard Stegall of Clarksville in the early 1970's as the "marrying uncle". I have located what I believe to be 3 wives.
John first became a Private under command of N.C. Gould, Clarksville Light Infantry, Red River County, 8th Brigade, Texas State Troops, enlisting June 15, 1861 at Clarksville. The Company was organized for active service according to the order of G. H. Wooten company commander, August 26, 1861.
He later enlisted in Company F., Whitfield's Legion of the 27th Texas Cavalry, but was discharged by reason of under age. The company was organized March 7, 1862. (Source: Clarksville & Old Red River County, 1937, author: Pat B. Clark).
He applied for a Texas Confederate Pension on Aug. 20, 1909 and approved on Aug. 31, 1909, #11728 (14729 file number). He stated on his papers that he was discharged at Tupelo, Miss. on account of being underage and bad health. Application for Mortuary Warrant was filed. Fred A. Manton filed a Certificate of Undertaker, stating that he had charge of the body of F. C. Greiner, who died 30 April 1920. The Pension application papers show that he died while visiting in Paris, Texas.
He was city marshal of Paris about 1870. He was believed to have been a deputy marshal in Bowie County, Texas. The 1900 Lamar County Texas census shows John F. with his wife, Susan Greiner and 2 children, Laura Greiner age 7 and Birdie Greiner age 2.
Ballard stated that he had a wife named Betty at one time. According to Aunt Dora, John (also known as Ferd) moved to DeKalb, Texas in 1893.
